Benefits of Reading to Your Child

Even at a very early age, children can begin to understand the process of reading. Reading fosters imagination and the idea of possible worlds. Through identification with characters in a book, children learn social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and cooperation. Reading also allows children to learn about their environment. As they begin to point out places and objects that are new, they learn the concepts of shape, color, and size. A child and caregiver bond in a warm and loving way through the experience of sharing a book.

Using the Book

Practice hand-eye coordination by helping baby lift the flaps on each page. Talk about the different animals and where they live. Let your child touch the crinkly flaps to feel the textures.

Development Stage 6-12 Months

Look: Baby's eyes are sharp! Object permanency is evolving as he looks for hidden objects and watches for peek-a-boo surprises. Colorful patterns attract his attention.

Listen: Baby listens for familiar voices and laughs at elements of surprise. Language continues to advance as baby "talks" by making singsong, two syllable sounds.

Touch: Baby picks up and passes objects between both hands. Trying to make sense of the world around her, baby performs many cause and effect experiments: dropping, stacking, and nesting items. Interesting textures entice her to explore.

Move: Independence begins as baby sits alone, starts to crawl, and attempts to stand.

Play Ideas

Play peek-a-boo with your baby. Appear and then disappear behind your hands. Make the sounds of each animal you see in the book-let baby imitate you!
